What keeps you awake at night?

By Witchy | July 3, 2008

I am drinking a sugary glass of lemonade and eating a Polish dill pickle. Okay, two pickles.

Odd combination, I know. But will it help my insomnia? Because I have exhausted most other possibilities and am nearing the end of both my rope and my creativity.

I’ve tried herbal teas. I’ve tried “sleepytime” tea. I’ve tried orange pekoe. I’ve tried warm milk with honey. I’ve tried sleeping pills. Even tried counting she– okay, I didn’t count sheep. Not this time. Never worked in the past. What’s the point? It’s a stupid thing to do, anyway. Whenever I tried to count sheep, all I could think about was what filthy animals they actually are, and how much cleaning their wool requires in order to be usable. And did you know the burps and farts of a single sheep in one day could fill 15 pop bottles?* That’s pretty foul. And really, if you think about it, not conducive to encouraging pleasant dreams.

I’m not sure what is keeping me awake nights. Maybe it’s just worries. I tend to worry about things I shouldn’t, and then my mind goes at a million miles an hour, and won’t slow down.

I’ve tried reading as a way to relax my mind. It works for my husband. Puts him right out, right there in the chair. Mind you, he could fall asleep standing up, with his eyes open.

So I go to bed.

And lay there. Waiting. Breathing. Tossing. Turning. Twisting my legs in the sheets and tearing the bed apart in an effort to find a comfy spot. But that is ridiculous. The whole damned bed is a comfy spot. We have one of those memory-foam mattresses, and it’s amazing. A down-filled mattress pad makes it feel like you are sleeping on the world’s firmest cloud. So there’s no excuse not to be comfy.

Except insomnia.

So here I am, at 3:30 in the morning, drinking lemonade and munching on garlicky pickles.

Well, why the hell not? Got nothing else to do…

Sometimes a boner will keep me awake at night!
One of the few lifestyle changes I’ve made since my first heart attack is to slow down the worrying. I can worry myself sick. But I don’t anymore. One thing I stopped almost completely is bringing the J.O.B. home with me. Now I sleep, usually no more than 4-5 hours and never more than six! Also, my bladder has some influence on my sleeping!

I’m one of those people who need a solid eight hours in order to feel my best. I rarely get anything even close to that. That’s part of why I take a nap every day. Helps re-energize me for the rest of the day.

    Naps …
In a previous comment I suggested you meditate on DS’s love for his mom when you are trying to sleep. Bet that works!
